Ashgabat Declaration will speed up the implementation of multimodal Silk Road

Ashgabat Declaration was issued in connection with the 1st Global Sustainable Transport Conference held in the capital Ashgabat by the United Nations with the initiative of Turkmenistan. Ashgabat Declaration which will strenghten the cooperation in transport sector and will make haste to the new approaches in this sector, has started the process in this field.

Having strategic position in the European region, Turkmenistan has started Ashgabat process in order to carry out major projects in transport sector globally. The government of Turkmenistan spends greatest efforts in reviving historic Silk Road and developing it multimodally. İf the Silk Road was done via highway in the past, from now it will be continued by railway, air and sea.

Made in the framework of the global conference held in Ashgabat, Ashgabat Declaration comprises of 32 paragraphs. İn the first paragraph of the Declaration, the Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon stated that the 1st Global transport conference in Ashgabat on November 26-27, 2016 reached an important decision in continuing the sustainable development and strenthening fight against global warming.

İt is also expressed in the declaration that the conference organized with the support of the General Assembly of the UN and with the initiative of Turkmenistan is supported by the member states of the organization.

Top authorities of the political and economic world attended the meeting, many bilateral meetings were held within the scope of the conference, the exchange of ideas connected with the contributions of the cooperation in transport sector directed to the Sustainable Development Goals was done, states the declaration.

Also, the statement was made about the fields of coopeartion sectors via different types of transportation means, automobile, railway, air, ferry and sea were assessed in the scope of the conference and the problems of developing countries, countries without the reach to the sea, and small island countries in this sector were discussed.

Due to the provision of access of the sustainable transport to work places, schools, healthcare centers, and circulation of goods, the parties emphasized the importance of the cooperation in this sector.

Furthermore, the mention is made about the positive impacts of transport in contributing to the development of  tourism, trade and the increase of income of the countries.

Moreover, the attention is attracted to the safety in transport sector in Ashgabat Declaration. İt is stated that 1,25 million people lose their lives and from 20 to 50 million people get injured as a result of accidents every year.

As a result, it is mentioned in the Declaration that the participants of the conference expressed their gratitude to the President of Turkmenistan, the Government and the nation in organizing the Global Sutainable Transport Conference on top level.
