On April 27, 2022, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov met with the Head of the Demographic Statistics Division of the UN Statistics Office Srdjan Mrkic.
During the meeting, the parties reviewed the current state and prospects of Turkmenistan’s partnership with the UN, in particular with the UN Statistics Office and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).
The main topic of discussion was the preparations for the complete census of the population and housing stock of Turkmenistan in 2022. It was noted that a lot of work is being done in the country to date in preparation for this large-scale event.
During the meeting, R. Meredov welcomed Ronny Olof Lindstrom, the newly appointed UNFPA Country Director for Turkmenistan, wished him success in his new position and assured that Turkmenistan would continue its traditional cooperation with UNFPA.
The parties considered the forms of cooperation of the Turkmen side with the UN Statistical Office and UNFPA, bearing in mind the experience of these international structures in assisting countries in organizing a complete population census.
In addition, other areas of cooperation were discussed, such as the collection and analysis of statistical data, issues of gender equality and empowerment of women, well-being and development of youth.
