Turkmenistan and CNPC Sign Contract for the Development of Phase 4 of the Galkynysh Field

On 16 April 2026, in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan and China signed a contract aimed at significantly expanding the production capacity of Turkmenistan’s largest gas field — Galkynysh.

The contract was signed by the State Minister, Chairman of the State Concern “Turkmengaz”, Maksat Babaev, and, from the Chinese side, Du Yumin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of CNPC Amudarya Petroleum Company Ltd.

Under the agreement, the Phase 4 of development of the Galkynysh field includes the turnkey construction of facilities for the production and processing of natural gas.

Scope of the agreement:

  • Design and turnkey construction of facilities for the fourth phase of development of the Galkynysh gas field.
  • Creation of capacities for the preparation of 10 billion cubic meters of commercial gas per year.
  • Drilling and completion of production wells to ensure the planned production volumes.

The signing took place on the sidelines of the scientific and practical conference dedicated to the 20th anniversary of gas cooperation between China and Turkmenistan.

As noted at the conference by the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, “the launch of work on the development of the next — fourth — phase of the Galkynysh gas field through the joint efforts of the State Concern Turkmengaz and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) is yet another vivid testament to the flourishing of Turkmen-Chinese cooperation in the gas sector.”

The total reserves of the Galkynysh field, together with the Yashlar and Garakol fields, amount to 27.4 trillion cubic meters of gas. In total, seven phases of field development are planned.
