Strengthening the importance of disarmament

On May 13, 2020, an online meeting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan R.Meredov with the Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) Lassina Zerbo took place.

During the meeting, the parties discussed key areas of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the CTBTO. The constructive nature of Turkmenistan’s foreign policy activities, in particular on disarmament and non-proliferation issues, was emphasized. The parties spoke in favor of expanding the multilateral dialogue on nuclear non-proliferation issues.

Speaking about the importance of the entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, which is designed to become a key tool in ensuring non-proliferation, disarmament and nuclear safety, the parties emphasized the importance of Turkmenistan’s policy of permanent neutrality aimed at maintaining peace and stability in a global sense.

It was noted that, as a party to the fundamental international treaties and conventions of the UN, as well as a number of multilateral disarmament instruments, Turkmenistan intends to continue to promote these processes, both at the regional and global levels.

The parties discussed prospects for cooperation, including training, ensuring the participation of national experts in seminars and trainings organized by the CTBTO, and providing technical assistance.
