On Friday, 29 August 2025, the first telephone conversation took place between President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov and President of the Republic of Korea Lee Jae Myung, marking their first direct contact since President Lee assumed office. The news was confirmed by the press service of the South Korean President.
During the exchange, President Lee Jae Myung expressed his sincere appreciation to his Turkmen counterpart. He thanked President Berdimuhamedov for the congratulatory letter sent on the occasion of his inauguration, as well as for Turkmenistan’s invaluable assistance in June, when 59 South Korean citizens located in Iran were able to safely evacuate via Turkmen territory amid shifting dynamics in the Middle East.
President Lee commended the deepening and expansion of bilateral cooperation since the elevation of diplomatic relations to a mutually beneficial partnership in 2008. Over the years, both nations have achieved notable progress across various sectors. Recognizing these accomplishments, the two Presidents agreed to further strengthen and broaden their ties.
Particular emphasis was placed on collaboration in key areas such as energy and the implementation of industrial infrastructure projects.
Concluding the conversation, the presidents agreed to maintain close contact in preparation for the upcoming “Republic of Korea – Central Asia” Summit, scheduled to be held in South Korea next year.
