Meeting with the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

On February 18, 2026, a meeting was held at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome between the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan to the Italian Republic and Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the FAO T.Komekov and the Director-General of the Organization Qu Dongyu.

At the beginning of the meeting, Ambassador T.Komekov conveyed greetings on behalf of the Government of Turkmenistan, reaffirming high appreciation for the Organization’s activities. He expressed Turkmenistan’s readiness to further develop effective cooperation aimed at implementing advanced international practices in sustainable agricultural development and strengthening food security.

 

During the conversation, the sides discussed the results of the FAO chief’s visit to Ashgabat in January 2026, which included high-level meetings and the signing of an Agreement to establish a full-fledged FAO representation in Turkmenistan. They emphasized the significance of the International Conference “Food Security in a Changing Climate” held on January 22, 2026, in Ashgabat, as a platform for developing joint approaches to creating sustainable agri-food systems.

In turn, Director-General Qu Dongyu noted the constructive nature of his visit to Ashgabat and spoke highly of his meeting with the President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov.

Director-General Qu Dongyu highlighted Turkmenistan’s significant potential and its steady development. He emphasized that under the leadership of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, the country has a solid foundation for further sustainable growth and the strengthening of its position on the international stage.

The meeting noted Turkmenistan’s active role in international efforts regarding environmental protection, the rational use of natural resources, and food security. The FAO confirmed its readiness to provide comprehensive support for Turkmenistan’s initiatives within the framework of bilateral cooperation.

The parties also exchanged views on the implementation of the Country Programming Framework for 2026-2030, which will focus on climate change adaptation, water resource management and innovation.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the sides exchanged their best wishes.
