On July 1, 2020, the fifth session of the online seminar on the accession of the countries to the World Trade Organization (WTO) entitled “Accession in Focus: Eurasia” was held. Turkmenistan was represented at this session by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan V.Hajiyev.
The event was also attended by means of videoconferencing by the representatives of relevant departments and organizations of the public and private sectors, scientists from participating countries and WTO observers.
This session is a part of webinars on the process of accession to the WTO of Eurasian countries through the exchange of information, recommendations and expectations of the parties expressing their intention to join the WTO as a member or an observer.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs outlined Turkmenistan’s position on joining the WTO as an observer. Informing about the great preparatory work done in the country to study this issue, he noted three important aspects. Participation in the WTO as an observer contributes to the integration of Turkmenistan into international economic structures, attracting investments from abroad, ensuring guarantees and transparency for investors and trading partners, and will also strengthen the country’s position on commercial issues.
The parties also discussed a number of issues on further cooperation, exchanged recommendations and views on the procedure for joining the World Trade Organization.
