Turkmenistan has been elected to the membership commission of UNESCO

On the 21st of June 2021, during the 31st meeting of the Assembly of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO Turkmenistan was elected to the membership of the Executive Council of the given Commission for the period of 2021-2023.

Along with the Assembly, the Executive Council stands as the governing body of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO.

The aim of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) lies in rendering assistance to international cooperation and coordination of programmes related to research and strengthening of the potential for the expansion of knowledge about the nature, ocean resources and coastal regions, as well as the use of this information for the enhancement of management and protection of marine environment, provision of sustainable development and facilitation of the decision-making process by its Member States.

Election of Turkmenistan to the membership of the Executive Council serves as yet another vivid confirmation of the efforts of the country to take active part in the international and regional processes on protection of ecology, water and land resources, which is consonant with the ecological and water diplomacy carried out by the state.
