Review of turkmen-american cooperation

On June 23, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Vepa Hajiyev and the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Central Asia, Press and Public Diplomacy Jonathan Henick have met through videoconferencing to make half-yearly review of activities taking place in accordance with the outcomes of Turkmen-American political consultations.

During the meeting, the joint commitment of the sides to further development of bilateral cooperation in political, trade-economic and cultural-humanitarian spheres was reiterated.

The parties thoroughly discussed the issues pertaining to regional security and situation in Afghanistan. The efficiency of multilateral formats of collaboration, such as “Central Asia + USA” and “Turkmenistan – USA – Afghanistan” was underlined. The possibilities of strengthening the response mechanisms to the potential threats and challenges, including the trans- boundary crime were discussed.

The diplomats paid special attention to the development of trade-economic and investment ties between Turkmenistan and the USA. In this respect, the constructive work of the Turkmen-American Business Council was emphasized. It was underlined that the Turkmen side is interested in the attraction of American investments and technologies into the development of high-tech and innovative productions in Turkmenistan. Among the priority directions of collaboration, the areas of industry, energy, transport, agriculture and water industry were voiced.

The parties made special emphasis on cooperation in the area of ecology protection and resistance to climate change, which is of priority interest for both states. The diplomats spoke for the intensification of the partnership in the given sphere, including through the international platforms and respected organizations. The Turkmen side aims to take active part in the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), COP-26 that is planned to take place in Glasgow in November of 2021.

Besides, the parties spoke about the issues of humanitarian scope, including the contacts in the fields of culture and education.
