From September 6 to 8, 2025, a delegation from Turkmenistan, led by Minister of Railway Transport Mammet Akmammedov, visited Iran. The delegation held talks with Iran’s Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Farzaneh Sadegh, and the head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways, Jabbar Ali-Zakeri, according to IRNA news agency.
According to Sadegh, Iran aims to achieve a total transit volume of 20 million tons in cooperation with Turkmenistan, with 6 million tons of that being transported by rail. To reach these goals, Sadegh instructed the head of Iranian Railways to finalize a joint action plan with Turkmenistan’s railway transport ministry.
During the talks, special attention was given to revitalizing the Ashgabat Agreement (a corridor involving Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and Oman) and the China–Kazakhstan–Turkmenistan–Iran railway.
The two sides agreed to expand cooperation within the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) and other corridors, including the Armenia–Iran–Turkmenistan–Kazakhstan route, which will strengthen regional economic ties.
