Briefing on the adoption by the UN of the Resolution Aral Sea

On May 29, 2019, a briefing was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan on the adoption by the UN General Assembly of the Resolution “Cooperation between the United Nations and the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea.”

The key officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, representatives of a number of higher educational institutions of the country, heads and representatives of the diplomatic corps and international organizations accredited in Turkmenistan, journalists of national and foreign media attended the event.

At the beginning of the briefing, the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan read the  congratulatory message  of the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on the adoption of the Resolution.

During the briefing, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Central Asia, the Head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia N. German, the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea G.Bayjanov, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassadors of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Republic of Uzbekistan in Turkmenistan, scientists and experts of the country also gave speeches.

The detailed information about the Resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly, aimed at further consolidation of the efforts of the UN member states on cooperation between the United Nations and the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea was provided during the briefing.

As it was noted in the speeches, this Resolution is a recognition of the merits of Turkmenistan in strengthening effective international cooperation on overcoming the effects of the Aral crisis, including the improvement of the ecological and socio-economic situation in the Aral Sea basin.
