Central Asia – China Format Discusses Strengthening Regional Security

On 18 May 2026, Astana hosted the second meeting of Ministers of Internal Affairs and Public Security within the “Central Asia – China” format. The participants discussed strengthening regional security and countering transnational crime, drug trafficking, cybercrime, and extremism, according to the interior ministry of Kazakhstan.

Amid growing contemporary challenges, the meeting participants paid special attention to developing practical cooperation between law enforcement agencies, exchanging experience, implementing advanced technologies, and strengthening professional contacts.

“Public security and law and order directly affect the sustainable development and stability of the region. Today, the law enforcement agencies of our countries are strengthening practical cooperation in countering organized crime, drug trafficking, cybercrime, and extremism,” noted Yerzhan Sadenov, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan.

“Our shared task is to ensure the safety of our citizens, respond to modern challenges in a timely manner, and strengthen cooperation between law enforcement agencies of the ‘Central Asia – China’ format countries. This format has already demonstrated its practical relevance and opens up additional opportunities for joint work in the field of regional security,” the minister added.

The first meeting in the “Central Asia – China” format took place in 2024 in the city of Lianyungang.
