On March 9, 2026, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan between the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan S. Muhammetdurdyyev and Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Turkmenistan Jassim Mohammed Al-Attar.
At the beginning of the meeting, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan warmly welcomed the Iraqi diplomat and expressed gratitude to the Iraqi side for the decision to open the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Ashgabat.
The readiness of Turkmenistan to provide all the necessary assistance for the full functioning of the diplomatic mission of the brotherly country was emphasized.
During the meeting, it was noted that the opening of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Ashgabat will contribute to further strengthening of bilateral relations in the political-diplomatic, trade-economic, as well as cultural-humanitarian spheres.
It was also highlighted that the meetings at high and the highest levels, as well as ongoing political consultations between the foreign ministries of Turkmenistan and the Republic of Iraq, the most recent of which took place in October 2025 in Baghdad, contribute to the development of bilateral relations.
During the meeting, the parties discussed opportunities to expand trade and economic ties, including establishing the partnership between the business communities of two countries. Opportunities for developing cultural and humanitarian ties, including in science, education, sports, and tourism, were also emphasized.
It should be underlined that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Iraq in 2009, contacts between the two fraternal countries have rapidly developed in various fields, particularly in the international arena.
